Gastritis is the most common disease affecting the stomach. It is a disease of superficial gastric mucosa resulting in multiple small erosions formation. In more advanced & untreated cases ulceration can take place.
Gastritis can be produced by drugs such as aspirin & other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Infection also occasionally causes gastritis. The common organisms responsible for this are cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex, particularly in immune-compromised patients. Alcohol in high conc. damages the gastric mucosal barrier & is associated with acute gastric mucosal lesions & upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Overeating is another important cause other than the above.
The chief cause of chronic active gastritis is a bacterium named Helicobacter Pylori. This can lead to the development of atrophic changes and subsequently metaplasia. Patients with gastritis may suffer from nausea, heartburn, acidity pain, or abdominal distension that occurs as a result of eating or drinking. Indigestion is common. W.S.
