Description

Vitamin B12 is obtained mainly from animal foodstuffs. In a normal person, the requirement of vitamin B12 is 1-2 mg/day. In man absorption of vitamin B12 from the terminal ileum is facilitated by a gastric intrinsic factor, secreted by gastric parietal cells. Deficiency of Vitamin B12 is produced either by low dietary intake or due to failure of secretion of intrinsic factor from gastric parietal cells, where it is called Addisonian pernicious anemia. Both vitamin B12 and folate are essential for DNA synthesis and deficiency of one or both causes delayed division of hemopoietic megaloblasts which fail to mature to red cells. An increasing number of megaloblasts destroy bone marrow resulting in anemia. An anemic person develops fatigue, lethargy, breathlessness or exertion palpitations anorexia, dyspepsia, dizziness, dimness of anemia, especially pernicious anemia.
